"Liminal", a digital hand drawn animation, stands as the first chapter of a much larger story of Diaspora told through the eyes of a little refugee boy called Maz. In this first section, Maz struggles to hold on to hope when he is faced with the overwhelming wish to protect his mother from forces that are beyond his control.

We watch as his story unfolds in a state of timelessness where events are intertwined to highlight the unending wait that all refugees face, living a volatile state of confusion of being, belonging and consciousness.

Liminal, is based on a premise that long term unresolved conflict across generations in the Middle East specifically and in war torn lands in general yields an unhealthy environment for the youth of that region. Growing up in such a harsh reality leads these youths to either of the extremes of radicalism or escapism, one blindly driven the other driven blind. My thesis sheds light on how both extremes can come to co-exist in the same being and how confusion and vulnerability create a fertile ground to further push these youths so far we might not be able to get them back.
